Citibank Gold Card

The Citibank Gold card is an excellent card for anyone who plans on paying off their balances in full each period and wants to accrue some decent rewards. The Citibank Gold Card is for individuals over 18 years of age with a good credit rating and a taxable income of $35,000 per year or more. This credit card has a mid-range interest rate and a considerable annual fee, so only sign up for it if you are serious about getting rewards.

    Interest Rates, Fees & Charges

Interest Rate on Purchases 20.99% p.a.
    Annual Fee $149
Interest Free Period up to 55 days
    Cash Advance Rate 21.74% p.a.
    Card Type Gold
    Minimum Income Requirement $30,000 p.a.
    Credit Card Type Visa
    Rewards Program Yes

The Citibank Gold Card is a graduated version of the Citibank Silver Card, which offers a passable balance of rewards and mid-range interest rates. The Gold Card gets the same interest rate but a much, much higher credit limit. Another great perk from the Citibank Gold Card is the free international travel insurance. This covers you and your family whenever you buy travel tickets with your Citibank Gold Card. If your trip is cancelled, your personal items are damaged or you have other unexpected travel expenses, it’s covered, which adds a nice dose of peace of mind. At home, your purchases will also be protected by Purchase Cover Insurance in the case they are lost, damaged or stolen.

The rewards with the Citibank Gold Card are notable as well. You get 1 point for every $1 spent. Reward points can be exchanged for hotels, travel upgrades, restaurants, shops and other purchases. The Gold Card also lets you exchange reward points for Qantas Frequent Flyer points.

As for the interest rates, they could be better. The interest free days are a nice perk, but they only apply if you pay the full closing balance on your account each month. Plus, they don’t apply to your balance transfers or cash advances.

For consolidating credit cards, the introductory interest rate is very attractive but note that it reverts to the cash advance rate of if you don’t pay it off in the first 9 months.

Bottom-line: The Citibank Gold Card is a great way to accrue rewards and offers lots of protection for travel and expensive purchases. But the less-than-competitive interest rate should convince you to keep your balances paid down at the end of every month.
