Although many of us try to make the big savings when we are a bit short of cash, it can often be that saving on everyday items will make a bigger difference over time as the saving achieved, however small will be constantly repeated.

Here are some useful tips on how to save money you might not think you could have, to spend on luxuries, without too much hardship. This list is not exhaustive by any means, but the same general mindset can be applied to almost everything we do with often amazing results.

Groceries

Groceries make up a big part of anyone’s budget, and yet we still all throw away an incredible amount of food every day. Try and alter portion sizes so that there is nothing left on the plate, and encourage the whole family to take a small portion and top themselves up if they need to.

Leftovers can make a handy snack another day, saving you having to buy snacks or items for lunch etc.

Shopping Lists

Try and shop to a meal plan. Although it takes some time to do, if you work out a complete meal plan for your grocery shopping period, and work out all the ingredients, you will find you have much less waste.

Especially where fresh vegetables are concerned, try to identify meals that can use the ‚Äòother half’ of a vegetable instead of it just going bad or tired in the fridge.

Try and buy things that are in season. In-season items are always cheaper, generally better and larger. This is not just how to save money but can be good for the planet too.

Special Offers

Always try and pick up anything that is on special offer that you like if it can be frozen or if you can use it before it goes off. In several experiments, so long as you have a big enough fridge, freezer and store cupboard, it has been show that you can eat essentially the same items for around half the price, just by constantly stocking up on offer goods.

Remember most things approaching their shelf date in a store are nowhere near actually going bad, as the stores have to add in a margin of safety that with common sense is not an issue at home.

Store-Brand Items

With anything that you want to buy, a good method of how to save money is to try and buy store-brand items when it really seems to make no difference in quality. We all have our favourites and don’t always want to change, but give the cheaper options a try. You might be surprised.
